Problems connecting to mysql on localhost.

I have a linux 7.1 box with mysql and snort installed. I am trying to configure snort to log to the mysql database so
that I may use ACID. When I start snort up I get the error message:

mysql_error: Can't connect to local MYSQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
Fatal Error, Quitting..

After doing some searching I found mysql.sock located in /tmp. I couldn't find anywhere in the documentation for
snort, how to point to the proper location of the mysql socket. Furthermore, I attempted to create a symbolic link to
the /tmp/mysql.sock in /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock and that made mysql exit with an error.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance.
