snort stopped logging alerts to secure

I recently installed snort beta 1.8 and had things working to my
satisfaction.  I use snort2html to read the alerts from
/var/log/secure.  Last week this worked fine but this week snort has
stopped logging alerts to secure.  It continues to output information to
directories by ip address in /var/log/snort, but not secure.

I used and am continuing to use the follwoing command to launch snort:
/usr/sbin/snort -c /usr/local/etc/snort.conf -i eth0 -s -D

Permissions on /var/log/secure are the same as on /var/log/secure.1
which is last week's file that worked fine.

Any thoughts?
