City withdraws police-privacy lawsuit

The city of Kirkland has withdrawn its $609,000 lawsuit against a Mill Creek man who posted personal information about the city's police officers on the Internet, hoping instead that a new state statute will ensure that his controversial Web site remains shut down.

Gail Gorud, the Kirkland city attorney, said the city's legal arguments were ineffective because they relied too much on general themes such as personal privacy and the First Amendment.

"The new statute is specific to exactly what we're interested in," Gorud said yesterday.

Elena Garella, an attorney representing Web-site author Bill Sheehan, interpreted the city's actions as a "significant victory" for her client. "The city was losing at every turn," she said.
