All the cards there seem to be supporting only the 802.16e (mobile)
WiMax. If there's a fixed SS at a client side -- a BS at the ISP - and
another SS at the other end..what can I do?

Or are you saying I can just buy a card and sniff traffic without
connecting at all..like wireless(802.11)?

Lastly what do you mean by 'packets are packets'... didn't quite
understand.Sorry.

Thnx
Arvind

Wireshark supports most WiMax protocols for sniffing and was used for an
802.16d VoIP analysis for IEEE
(http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/login.jsp?url=http%3A%2F%2Fieeexplore.ieee.org%2Fiel5%2F4568415%2F4586016%2F04586026.pdf%3Farnumber%3D4586026&authDecision=-201)
as  for WiMax support on a laptop

that too has is possible at a low cost. Wireshark will capture the
traffic just fine. Before you overshoot, remember at the end of the day,
packets are packets, no matter the delivery medium (Ethernet, Wireless,
DOCSIS, ATM, etc.)
