Finding Vulnerabilities in Standalone Applications

Dear List,

I am curious to know how to find vulnerabilities in Standalone 
applications (like IE, Firefox, Acrobat Reader, MS word,etc). How people 
are finding new vulnerabilities in these applications? Is there any 
specific tools for these? Do I need to learn some computer languages?

Proper guidance in this areas is greatly appreciated
