I have taken the Certified Pen Testing Specialist course from Mile2 and thought it was very beneficial. Also please take into account that I am very green in this field, so I had a basic knowledge of pen testing, but nothing to the extent that was covered. The instructor was excellent in that he didn't just follow the book and read back the material. He would cover the same object in the chapter, but would show the actual practical application of the procedure. There was a test available at the course completion, but I haven't taken this as of yet. I was more interested in the material and knowledge, than getting a piece of paper. I feel I need more experience to show earn the paper and prove I know what I am doing instead of cramming from a book. Take it for what you will, but that is just my opinion.
My only question might be, what value does this cert and a few others like it actually have in the security community, especially as related to the hiring end, HR/agency/etc. It's there that the real value of a certification shines brightest, as is oft discussed in this and other related lists. Granted, some like to be tested and certified for their own self worth assessments, to show themselves what they know, other like to be part of the fad of pushing out alphabet soup in their .sigs. But the real value of a certification is it's acceptance within the community at large and the value it places upon the title holder in gaining employment or nice sweet raises and bonuses.
