This is usually useful for client-side attacks. Once an attack is able to execute code on a end user system (ie. a desktop pc) it may be desired to create a command & control channel with an external system. If all outbound communications from the end user system to the Internet must go through a proxy the complications to establish that outbound channel are increased. At the last Black Hat Federal, Max Caceres did a presentation on client-side penetration testing and elaborated on some of the technicalities of an actual software implementation to do it. His presentation is available here: http://www.coresecurity.com/common/showdoc.php?idx=496&idxseccion=13&idxmenu=32 -ivan Erin Carroll wrote:
Request from the Moderator: Could we focus on what uses bypassing a proxy would serve in regards to pen-testing specifically? Thanks.
