For 802.11x in 2.4GHz., I've had good luck with this one:

'velcroed' to the lid of the laptop. 7.5dB/90 deg sector in ~4x2x1 inches. Mine is an older one without the metal mount, but that appears to be easily removed. I use a 10in. pigtail to connect to the PCM card.
