Mark, I think you should look at NTOP (ntop.org). If you run ntop prior to pen-test on a span port, you should be able to get a better glimpse of traffic and network before engaging your analysis. Etherape is another tool of choice prior to network mapping. I want to find out what computers are connected to which switches. I don't care if it tells me what type of switch it is, but accurately tell me what IP addresses are hanging off it.
