I don't know the specifics of when the protocol version changed, but I have seen mysql versions as new as 3.22.30 with protocol 9 and servers as old as 3.21.25 with protocol 10. Ted Behling (tbehling () MONARCHIS NET) was saying:
In MySQL, the software version number (e.g., 3.22.32) and the protocol version number (e.g., 10) do not correspond 1:1. I'm running 3.21.29 locally, and it uses protocol version 10. My understanding is that protocol versions are backward (but not forward) compatible.
