There was an excellent discussion of this topic on this morning's Diane Rehm show with a number of folks including Alan Paller from SANS. I think it makes good distinction with some of the two different parts of the discussion and highlights how that kind of attack is taking place and they even go over some of the past attacks that I was not aware of. You can listen to the show from this morning at http://wamu.org/audio/dr/10/01/r1100114-30850.asx if you want to hear their discussion on it. The media, and maybe Google themselves, are lumping the censorship and the hacking incident together as a reason to pull out but I don't see how the two are related. Whether or not they are in China they can still be targets of Chinese hackers. There is some evidence that the current lot were going after the accounts of Chinese users but other companies, such as Adobe, were also attacked so it wasn't all about one Chinese group attacking another. Am I missing something? Robin 2010/1/14 Michael Miller <mike.mikemiller at gmail.com>:I have the same view. ?They will try to deflect any blame for any attack on western corporations. ?They might raise a stink for a little bit. It will be interesting to see what happens to google, if they close up shop or raid the google data center. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China." In a blog post, Google said it detected a "highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China" in mid-December and that the attack resulted in "the theft of intellectual property from Google." http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126333757451026659.html?mod=djemalertTECH Since the WSJ wants you to pay, see: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/new-approach-to-china.html I hope they cover this on ISD tonight.
