Why don't more *nix dev's...

There have been several efforts to standarize on a single package format, and single package manager. When people are coding to scratch their own itches there will likely always be forks of this sort kf thing, as there is jyst a lot of differing opinion as to whats "right" By the same token, moving from a distro with a good package manager like Ubuntu over to OSX or any flavor of windows can be a little disappointing in the lack of management on those platforms, and lack of available softeare out of the box. The type of install script you see in VMware is something generally reserved for commercial software whose license wont allow for it to be rolled up in a .deb and distributed through apt-get Sent from my iPhone On Dec 6, 2009, at 12:02 AM, Richard Baker <richardebaker at pathsecurity.com

But that still requires that the program you want is in the manager... If I just goto a website and download a "package" I still have to worry about rpm vs deb ect... the scripts can and should be built to do the dependancy checks and complain if something is missing... I guess I just hate that *nix is so disjointed for the end user... I know different distributions are built for specific reasons... but the package manager concept seems to fragment more then help... then there are special projects and packages to translate other package types... its just a mess... I run Mac as my primary OS... but I build admin and support servers running mostly Ubuntu... Maybe Im just tweeked by there being different package managers used my different distributions in a community that talks about wanting more acceptance from the casual user... Maybe this is mostly my Rant about getting some unity in the *nix world... mostly Linux... use the package managers to support the core apps in the distro... like WUS or AUS does and use rolled up installers for other apps... -REB On Sat, Dec 5, 2009 at 8:30 PM, Michael Douglas <mick at pauldotcom.com> wrote: But... you're kind of speaking in favor of package managers. On my debian system I just need to do the following: sudo apt-get install {program that I want} That's *easy*, and I can have it update and stay current too. Rollup scripts are nice, they do beat the doing it by hand... but I prefer a good package. - Mick PS: what version of *nix are you using? Write rolled up install scripts... like the installer for VMware Player... One .sh file that has all the needed elements rolled up in ituuencodeddirectly in the script... I know *nix users like to "have control" but doesn't it makesense??> oram I off base... Sanity Check??Isn't that what distributions and their package managers are for?
