802.11b devices CANNOT decode 802.11g frames since they use different RF modulation. DSSS vs. OFDM
I stand corrected; I was under the impression that 802.11g clients used DSSS for backward-compatibility for rates 802.11b data rates. This appears to be true only for broadcast frames that must be decoded by all clients. Unicast frames will be send using OFDM modulation, which an 802.11b client will not be able to demodulate. I would also note that an 802.11b card in monitor mode would see management and control frames from 802.11g STA's since these frames are sent at a lower data rate for backward-compatibility.
