I'm paying for myself to come over from the UK. Things I've worked out
are to book the flight early and stay in a guest house/B+B rather than
the hotel, saves a fortune.

Eating and socialising while you are there is fairly cheap. I lived
off burritos and chinese takeaway the last two years. Having friends
with corporate credit cards is always handy as well :-)
