Newcomers interaction to community

Hi everyone ,
How a newbie can contribute to Nmap? I mean are there any features on which
a newbie can work ,or he/she should propose that new feature then community
will decide next?

Moreover I am looking forward that Nmap will come in Gsoc this year as it
is one of coolest organization for security enthusiast .
