Anticipation for an Nmap project!

Hello, my name is Sherlock Wisdom and I'm an undergrad coder. I've been using Nmap for a while now (love it!). So in anticipation of GSOC 2017, I found a project I'd enjoy working on under 'Testing/Automation specialist'. I'm experienced with C++ and have some experience with basic unit testing, but I plan on proposing to work on the regression testing for Nmap. I do face a problem though; It doesn't come clear to me if it would be writing test for specific components of the code base, or writing a test for the whole code base. Also, is there a specific format appreciated for writing this test, or is it open for using other methods for writing the test. I apologize if my problem is very rudimentary, but it's genuine. I'd love to automate this test as well, so an understanding of what would be needed would help me do some more comprehensive practice sessions before applications begin. I'd be so grateful for any bit of information which is given to my on this. I'm doing GSOC for the first time and would love understanding the task I'd be proposing on. Thanks in advance. Cheers.
