Hi,

GSoC 2017 is coming up and a lot of students will be going back to home
from University and will probably be thinking of starting contributing to
open source projects.

A lot of students will be asking the same question as you. I decided to
write a blog post to answer the question.[1]

It's currently in a draft like state. I would love your suggestions to
improve the post.

Hey all,
I am currently a Computer Science undergraduate. Getting straight to
point, I am proficient with C/C++ and python and have also worked with
python and R for data analysis and data visualisation and I know
fortran in bits.
I want to start contributing towards your project to gain some
experience in open-source development and would love to participate in
the GSOC program later if I do get a chance.
I am familiar with version control too but i am just new to open-source.
Can someone please tell me how to get started or provide some links?
I have already gone through your site and will continue browsing
meanwhile for more information.
But it'll be really helpful if someone can guide me a bit.

Thanks in advance

Hello Rudransh,

Have a look at this answer to a similar question by Gyanendra Mishra:

Hi Durgesh,

You can look at the following resources to get started.

[1] Is a very nice response to a similar question asked sometime in 2014.
[2] A more formal how to contribute guide.
[3] The `HACKING` file
[4] Explains the Code Standards followed.
[5] An article explaining what exists and why it exists.
