zenmap UI speedup

Hi all,

Earlier today, I committed some code to the main zenmap branch (r14471) that
speeds up the update_ui() function considerably.  Here is what I measure (in
terms of time spent in update_ui):
Before the patch:  0.408789 seconds
After the patch:     0.051250 seconds

An almost 8x improvement!

David recorded similar results.
