Hi again. I still do not have my XP computer, but I installed Linux (using the Ubuntu distro) and nmap works fine there.
Can you provide a --packet-trace from the Linux host? If Nmap on Ubuntu thinks the host is up then it must be getting some kind of response back (that isn't seen by your Vista machine). That might help us determine what to suggest next.
The only firewall I have is Windows.
