Indeed I was stumped at first, but then I realized that by using "buf", all of
the options of this nature directly correspond to the receive functions they
utilize:

"bytes" -> receive_bytes()
"lines" -> receive_lines()
"buf" -> receive_buf()

And I like this.  But I'm more than willing to change it to something better
if you (or whoever) have something in mind.
