I must confess I have not tried this test release but i am curious if
the WinPcap 3.1 that is included in the Win32 Installer is any different
than the Standard WinPcap? Some of us use WinPcap for Ethereal and and
other applications.

Only the installer is different. So it should still work for other
tools. Also, if you already have WinPcap 3.1 installed, it should
detect that and not install. Also, you can uncheck the "install
WinPcap" box on the Nmap self-installer and it won't be installed. If
our installer detects a different version than 3.1 already installed,
it will warn you before upgrading/downgrading.

The big difference is that the official WinPcap installer makes a
network connection back to their servers to display an HTML page.
They have their reasons for this, but some Nmap users were
uncomfortable with that "phone home" behavior for security and privacy
reasons. I don't blame them. Our installer omits that "feature", but
should be otherwise compatible.

I see the Zip version is included without the WinPcap. I hope this will
continue to be the case in the future.

I haven't looked at the download stats lately, but if many people
prefer that version, I'll keep creating it. And as I already
mentioned, running the WinPcap installer is optional even in the
normal Nmap installer.

Cheers,
