Some older *nix boxes or other special devices (UPS & so) also tend to
respond fast to UDP ...

... and vice versa. I think eventually it's not a matter of the
operating system alone that results in the duration of the scan. 

What about setting --host_timeout ?

Came to my mind as well :)
