Here are the settings that I had:

Unfortunately, they did not seem to have an affect.  I am still 
receiving those error messages with those grueling pauses. 
Any other buffer settings that I could play with?

In case there is any useful information in it, I am including a dump 
from 'free' and from 'sysctl -a'
(I know it's a lot of info to be pasting into an email, but I'm not sure 
what is or is not relevant.  Plus I'm desparate...)
