Well, the problem is that with WinNT/2k/XP, (and i <i>think</i> 9x/Me) there
is a loopback driver issue, so you can't scan yourself. I haven't looked
through the registers, stack, or looked at the extended eip information, but
i'm pretty sure that this is the old driver issue. (Unless I'm just ignorant
and that problem was fixed a while ago).

this is what i got when i run nmap.
the command i issued is 'nmap -v my_ip'

the output was:
Starting nmap V. 3.00 (www.insecure.org/nmap)
No tcp,udp, or ICMP scantype specified, assuming SYN Stealth scan. Use -sP
if you really don't want to portscan (and kust want to see what hosts are
up).

the program ran for a few seconds then the above msg is display in windows
dialog...
