More via: http://www.colombopage.com/archive/August23123745SL.html Aug 23, Colombo: The Internet connection to Sri Lanka crashed completely late Saturday night following major damage to the submarine cable that connects the island to the global network, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) said. SLT said the damage was caused by a ship, and it may take more than 24 hours to repair the cable. "We have lost connectivity to global Internet due to failure in the international submarine cable system. All measures have been taken to normalise this as early as possible," SLT said. Sri Lanka Telecom's connectivity to the outside world is through the Mount Lavinia landing point of the undersea SEA-ME-WE-III (SMW-III, South East AsiaMiddle EastWestern Europe) fibre optic cable link managed by French and Singapore telecom." 8<----- snip ---------- - ferg -- Sean Donelan <sean () donelan com> wrote: Sri Lanka's high court has ordered the seizure of an Indian cargo vessel which allegedly cut a submarine cable connecting the island's telecommunications subscribers with the rest of the world. The court ordered that the vessel, State of Nagaland, be held at the Colombo port where it berthed on Sunday after accidentally severing the cable known as the SEA-ME-WE-III with its anchor. -- "Fergie", a.k.a.
