Re: framework Digest, Vol 63, Issue 4

The issue is that the msf3 folder doesn't have artifacts from either a git clone or an svn checkout.

If you can issue commands, you can blow away your msf3 directory, and do a git clone of the metasploit github
repository. This will fix the problem.

As the Open Source Issue Manager, someone who does not work for
Rapid7, I can tell you that this actually makes it easier to
update core libraries and such. At the same time, it can be
sidestepped for those that prefer to do so by git cloning the repo
and handling the dependencies yourself. Unfortunately you can't
have your cake and eat it too in this scenario. As a side effect,
I imagine it helps to further justify the continued support of the
Metasploit Framework (not the paid versions) when Rapid7
management can see at least some of the cases when people upgrade
from the community edition to the paid versions. Given all that
MSF has gained from the acquisition, I think this is a small
"price" to pay, esp. since it can be side-stepped w/o penalty.

Thanks for the insight..it does help. As I only run msfconsole and
msfupdate (clearly not running the later near enough ;)) I'll go with
the github route...truth be told I've never even seen the gui..perhaps
that's not a "normal" case usage.

Hi,

I have a feeling this might not be the right place, but I'm experiencing problems running msfupdate installed through
homebrew.

$ brew install metasploit
$ msfupdate

[*]
[*] Attempting to update the Metasploit Framework...
[*]

/usr/local/bin/msfupdate:190:in `<main>': Cannot determine checkout type:
`/usr/local/Cellar/metasploit/4.5.0-2013021301/libexec' (RuntimeError)

If anybody has come across this I'd appreciate input, otherwise I'll start looking into the homebrew formula / rvm
communities for a fix.

I would open a ticket with them, they also now push Ruby 2.0 as default and that has problems with OpenSSL loading in
Metasploit so you are forced to use chruby or RVM

Thanks, I had rvm installed and was using ruby-2.0.0-p0.

For posterity:

    $ rvm use 1.9.2

fixed the problem.

Whoa, I did not know you could event attempt to install metasploit via brew, I always used Carlos' Mac guide.
