Using A Different PERL

I use metasploit framework on OSX. I have the dependencies for it instlled in
/opt/local/ from DARWINPORTS.  My question is since I have modified msf* to
point to the PERL in /opt/local/bin/perl will I miss any code changes to those
files since they are ignored if I say retain changes. 

Is there a way for a different perl to be specified and still receive changes
for those files?
