COLUMBIA -- The tab to fix the largest hacking at a U.S. state agency keeps growing.

South Carolina needs to spend nearly $15 million next year to centralize computer security at state agencies – and spend $7.3 million a year thereafter on that security, a consultant told state leaders Wednesday.

The work would require 37 employees with an annual payroll of $4.7 million, according to the report from Deloitte Consultants.

No decisions were made Wednesday. The 2013-14 state budget approved by the S.C. House budgets $25 million for cyber-security efforts, including money to continue providing credit-fraud monitoring for taxpayers whose financial information was stolen from the S.C. Department of Revenue.

South Carolina already has spent more than $20 million in response to the hacking, which involved tax-return data for 6.4 million consumers, their children and businesses.
