A theft of tens of thousands of dollars in the form computer equipment from a city office in Chicago may have exposed personally identifiable information (PII) or protected health information (PHI) to authorized access or abuse.

According to a Chicago Tribune report, the theft took place at the 1600 block of West Chicago Avenue, which houses the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) offices for its Division on Domestic Violence as well as a satellite senior center. The burglary was reported to police at noon on May 7 but information about when the crime took place is not yet available.

While Chicago News Affairs Office Joshua Purkiss did indicate the value of the stolen computer at close to $41,000, Chicago Police has not indicated anything about the contents of the stolen equipment.

DFSS provides an array of services to Chicagoans, ranging from youth to senior programs. Of particulary significance to the burglarized office is the information pertaining to its services for victims of domestic violence. According to a DFSS fact sheet, the department has worked with 9,000 domestic violence victims and their children in the past year. Services include case management and housing.
