Oxford University has launched a cross-departmental Cyber Security Centre designed to improve online security.

The university said the centre will work to create new ways to protect internet users and companies' information, in the face of the increasing threat from cyber criminals and terrorists.

"The Oxford Cyber Security Centre is the new home to cutting-edge research designed to tackle the growing threats posed by cyber terrorism and cybercrime, and to safeguard the trustworthiness of electronically-stored information," the university said.

Already having accrued £5m in funding, the centre will employ 12 permanent academic staff, 25 research staff and 18 doctoral students, each from various departments within the university.

Its primary goals are to look for the means to mitigate the risks of data breaches, minimise the impact of human error and reduce financial damage.
