MONTREAL -- "For the other 20 kilos, let's talk on Skype."

It may be marketed as a cheery way to video-chat live on the Internet 
with your cousin overseas but Skype is also the method of choice for a 
lot of organized criminals, especially now that police have breached the 
fortress-like BlackBerry Messenger, with its encrypted exchanges, says 
one expert on the Mafia.

And the evolving technology of communications — and listening in — has 
big implications for the general public, another expert says; it could 
mean the legal expectation of privacy in a phone call, email or letter 
doesn't always apply to text messages.

Canadians send an average of 224 million text messages a day and that's 
not including encrypted BlackBerry Messenger messages. Canadian 
statistics on BBMs aren't publicly available.

BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion was tight-lipped Thursday about a 
media report that the Quebec provincial police obtained BlackBerry 
messages to nab suspects Raynald Desjardins and Vittorio Mirarchi, 
accused of murder in the Nov. 24 slaying of mobster Salvatore Montagna, 
east of Montreal.
