Cops to tackle cyber crime

IN AN attempt to train its personnel to investigate cyber crimes,
Delhi Police have made computer training compulsory for all new
constables and sub-inspectors. For this purpose, two specialised
computer-training centres have been set up at the Police Training
College, Jharoda Kalan.

While constables have to undergo training for nine months, the
sub-inspectors' training is for two years. "Knowledge of computers has
been made an integral part of the training. This will help make
policemen computer literate and will improve investigation of cyber
crime cases," said Kiran Bedi, Joint Commissi-oner of Police,
Training.

Presently, there are 40 computers at the PTC and the numbers will be
increased in the next few months. The city police have also started a
six-month computer course even for serving policemen. They are being
trained at the VI battalion in Model Town.

"A silent computer revolution has been going on in Delhi Police and
the results will be visible in the next few months," Ms Bedi said.

Training policemen to tackle cyber crime finds place in the training
calendar for the year 2001 released by the city police today. A
special web site is being created from where policemen can download
the training calendar. Senior police officials said since it was not
possible to train each of the 55,000 police personnel at the PTC, it
was decided this calendar would be prepared and handed over to various
units.

"There will be regular monitoring whether the training calendar is
being followed or not. Information can be easily accessed from the
website. With this, the onus has been put on officers in charge of
training," Ms Bedi said.
