The breach, the first major known case of a security breach in Ireland, occurred after a hacker broke into Eircom's internet system and gained access to 30,000 of its accounts, posing serious confidentiality and privacy questions for the service providers. The Irish Independent has learned the arrest was made after gardai from the computer crime unit, part of the Garda National Bureau of Fraud Investigation, carried out a raid on a house in Co Wicklow. A 17-year-old was taken to Wicklow town Garda Station, where he was detained under the Criminal Damage Act for alleged offences of damage to computer data. The youth was released shortly after 9pm last night and a file is prepared for the DPP. The security breach on August 17 last caused serious difficulties for Eircom users who's passwords had to be changed by the company for security reasons.
