A variant of the "ILOVEYOU" computer virus was detected again in Ireland
this afternoon. Several Irish companies were emailed the virus, including
Eircom.

"ILOVEYOU" has the potential to wipe computer files and will forward itself
to names in an email address book, if executed. This afternoon's outbreak
arrived in email accounts with the subject line "Fwd: Joke" and with an
attachment entitled "Very Funny". It is likely the user will receive the
virus email from somebody they know.

Computer users are advised not to open the email and delete it immediately.
If the attachment is executed the virus will begin to work.

The 'ILOVEYOU' virus which crippled computer systems worldwide last May
originated in the Philippines.

The latest outbreak has been described as a "minor epidemic" by Irish
Internet security firm Entropy Ltd. Mr John Ryan Sales Director of Entropy
said many companies would have taken precautions after the last occurrence
of the virus and so would be safe.

A spokesman for anti-virus company Sophos said the virus was the third most
common this month and was at a level to be expected after its widespread
occurrence in May.

It was estimated then to have attacked at least 45 million computers
worldwide including those in the Ford motor firm, the Pentagon and the
British parliament.

A Filipino computer student faced charges in connection with the virus but
was never convicted. Mr Onel de Guzman (23) was subsequently hired last
month by a British computer security firm.
