The report starts with a complete failure to understand the Internet and the powerful idea of separating the
infrastructure from what we do with it.

“5G Communications and other next generation networks designed and architected at the outset with enhanced security,
connectivity, and availability.”

The idea of building security and intelligence and trust into the network was the big idea of SS7 – one that the
Internet triumphed over by only require best-efforts forwarding of packets and not trying to second-guess innovation
outside the network. [This is why 5G is so attractive to phone companies trying to return to the past] Concepts like
trusted identity are an attempt to banish ambiguity.

Throwing a big rocket at the moon was a well-defined objective with well-defined metrics. Cybersecurity is a blanket
term for disparate and noncommensurate challenges. The first step should be understanding the landscape and then
having a process so we can learn how to come to terms and live with this new landscape rather than attempting to
conquer it as if it were an enemy we could defeat.

The real danger is that this campaign is part of a strategy to kill the golden goose of the Internet with
telecommunications providers being active stakeholders in that effort. After all, if you can’t trust ATT who can you
trust?

The National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee just voted to send Trump a report urging the creation of
a cybersecurity "moonshot" project to secure the internet by 2028.
