For example there was a BBC show recently touting the features of 5G including telesurgery. And yes, some VR devices in the same room can get the performance promised but extending it over the network is asking far too much. And it doesn’t make sense that autonomous vehicles will have to depend on being tethered to an extremely high performance network. Doesn’t matter – just call it 5G and everyone accepts that it happened. The irony is that 4G actually performed better than promised in that it now can support voice. But that’s thanks to accepting best-efforts VoIP rather than relying on traditional telecom. That should be a hint that we need to embrace the Internet’s model rather than depending on billable promises but that’s all forgotten when we simply accept 5G marketing hype. This comes at a steep price because the success of VoIP should demonstrate the value and power of Ambient Connectivity as infrastructure rather than billable pipes. Instead we’re accepting the idea that communicating is inherently expensive despite all the evidence to the contrary. Even if it costs $1000 per household (that’s for brand new multigigabit fiber to single unit homes – far less for radios and dense buildings) that’s a year or two of broadband OR cellular and then we’ve paid it off. Yet we continue to pay year after year without and like a bad payday loan.
