There are several elephants in the room.  Regardless of the merits of John
Gilmore’s observations
and the various rebuttals, non-Defense discretionary spending is about
600B$, a bit greater than
Defense spending at 584B$.  Of that, approximately 145B$ (77B$ Defense,
69B$ non-Defense) is
federally funded research.  Total spending is about 3.9T$.  Interest on the
debt is about 241B$, much
greater than federally funded research.  Social Security, Medicare,
Medicaid add up to 1.87T$.
There is an other category that apparently is a grab bag of additional
entitlements that add up to 563B$,
putting entitlements way over 50% of total federal spending.
