Once students exhaust their school's offerings, in many cases they are entitled to start taking college courses at a local university, and the school district has to pay.
It's really common for students who are working far ahead of grade level to have a rough time in schools all over the U.S. because many schools and school districts haven't made effective plans for them or feel they don't have the resources to offer them more challenging coursework. This is unfortunately not just a problem in one state. It can make a huge difference when there's a parent or other adult prepared to advocate on a student's behalf, look around for other resources and options, and sometimes argue with school officials -- like in this case. Although it's no excuse for forcing students to sit in boring classes or study hall during the day, and may be less than ideal for things like foreign language learning, I think the Internet has been helping here. There are a lot of truly wonderful courses that people can pursue online, often at their own pace and according to their own interest (and on the Internet nobody knows you're a middle schooler). -- Seth David Schoen <schoen () loyalty org> | No haiku patents http://www.loyalty.org/~schoen/ | means I've no incentive to 8F08B027A5DB06ECF993B4660FD4F0CD2B11D2F9 | -- Don Marti ------------------------------------------- Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/247/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/247/18849915-ae8fa580 Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=18849915&id_secret=18849915-aa268125 Unsubscribe Now: https://www.listbox.com/unsubscribe/?member_id=18849915&id_secret=18849915-32545cb4&post_id=20170605021631:81D1CAD0-49B6-11E7-9B0C-C7B8B50F925F Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
