Because the adverts appeared to come from Vonage, a past advertiser, the Times allowed a third-party vendor that it did not vet to deliver the adverts. This is where the fun began.
The adverts (for those who have missed the saga thusfar) created an image on the victim's computer screen that showed a "scan" for viruses and then the victim was told that he should purchase antivirus software (from the advertiser) to fix the problem.
