This article is the result of a commencement address given at the University of Michigan, 18 December 2005, where Freeman Dyson (encouraging his audience to greet the future with heretical thinking as well as common sense) listed THREE heresies: first, "that all the fuss about global warming is grossly exaggerated" (note that he does not say wrong, simply grossly exaggerated); second, "that biotechnology will soon be domesticated"; third, "that the United States has less than a century left of its turn as top nation." Heresy #1, which has received all the attention, was considerably milder in its speculations than heresy #2 or heresy #3.
