A university gives faculty better healthcare benefits on retirement if they achieve certain lengths of service and age. A tuition benefit for faculty that vests after a certain number of years of employment and requires you still to be on the payroll while the kids are in college is another way of doing the same thing. Other examples are myriad. We need to make much clearer distinctions than are now being made in the media if we are to talk about acceptable and unacceptable practices.
