A suggestion for the company's lawyers and PR people: Anytime the company feels obliged to take such a step -- which is not a trivial matter to the vast majority of users who prefer to make their own decisions about what sites to visit and what services to use -- it would be well advised to prominently post an explanation at the same time. This would help avoid the understandable frenzy of concern about the company's actions and motives.
