sharing of ethernet -- no go

I have my iphone set to 3G off (to avoid outrageous ATT rates WIFI on.  
(tried with airplane mode also. I set up sharing with no encryption.   
on the mac. On the iphone I saw the wifi and connected but when I try  
to access the net it does not seem to connect. ANY IDEAS?
