I guess we should conclude that it's best to treat people that a majority want to treat badly with "the laws you have, not the laws you wish you had." (thanks, Donnie)
If a woman was thought repugnant (or "an animal"), it is a fine American legal tradition to throw her in jail under any statute that works. For example, the US invented "vagrancy" laws in the post- reconstruction south to imprison and put blacks to work in labor-crews that amounted to peonage (near slavery) back in the late 19th and early 20th century. We Americans are very creative at using the law to screw over any class of people we want to.
But that's not why we were supposed to pass the Patriot Act, nor why we should have it.
As for the "bleeding heart left wing liberal opposed to the police" - I guess the implication is that we should classify people by their declared beliefs as good people or bad people? Self-labeling oneself as a "good Christian" or a "good liberal" doesn't amount to much. People who call themselves "good X" have murdered others, and people who have thought themselves "sinners" have done much for the world.
