Most certainly the view from the ranks of the Business Software  
Alliance and
the Coalition for Patent Fairness is that member companies are losing  
their
edge.  But I submit this is the natural evolution of bigger  
companies.  They
all lose their edge over time.

There are plenty of vibrant inventive companies rising to take the  
lead but
they are not going to be members of the Business Software Alliance  
anytime
soon.

Companies evolve as they age.  They change from serious inventors to
incremental inventors.  They often become patent pirating bullies  
preying on
the younger companies who have produced the inventions they need to stay
competitive.

They get attitude adjustments for their predatory conduct and eventually
figure out that buying inventions based companies or licensing is the  
right
way to continue to prosper.  GE and J&J are both examples of companies  
which
finally accepted that it is unlikely that they will produce the really
important inventions and that it is much safer to bring new blood into  
the
companies ethically.

Members of the Business Software Alliance have not figured their out  
yet.
Growing up is always a painful process :)
