Willthey stop me from watching a stored dvd with a PG13 or better yet MA rating? Will they try to sop me from watching Marjoe (I am sure this would insult many a religious person? Where do we stop?

Given the nature of seating, which is for better or worse one of the few times in today's society that strangers come into such close contact with one another with no say in the matter, does an airline have the right to stop somoene from watching a pornographic video on their DVD, or from looking at Hustler? Can parents assume that their children will not be subject to having to see this material in the next seat? If so, why is it different if it is on the Internet? In other words, are they trying to make smokers healthier or block second hand smoke. If the latter, there are obviously better ways than with filters or bans, but is the principle really a bad one? -----Original Message----- From: David Farber [mailto:dave () farber net] Sent: Wednesday, October 08, 2008 12:44 PM To: ip Subject: [IP] Re: American Airlines to Filter Pornography Begin forwarded message: From: Lauren Weinstein <lauren () vortex com> Date: October 8, 2008 12:23:27 PM EDT To: dave () farber net Cc: lauren () vortex com Subject: Re: [IP] American Airlines to Filter Pornography Dave, How is American Airlines defining pornography again? Topless photos? Fully naked photos? Nasty textual descriptions? Can passengers browse to the Playboy Web site, or the illustrated sexually-transmitted diseases prevention section of a health site? Does this prohibition only apply to "porn" -- or are non-sexual "violent and disgusting" images sites also forbidden? Seriously, will passengers be able to access Google Images or Flickr? YouTube? There's no telling what sorts of goodies will pop up on those that *someone* snooping at your laptop might find upsetting! We can't have anyone upset regarding what *you're* looking at now can we? Of course we know what AA will likely do. They'll presumably use one of the commercial filtering services that employ arbitrary block lists and can usually be trivially bypassed via simple proxies and other means. And like most other Internet censors, AA will probably keep adding to the prohibited list over time, in a desperate but hopeless attempt at information control for ostensibly noble aims. If AA put more effort into treating their passengers as at least a higher class of cattle instead of playing Internet sex cop, we'd all be better off. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein lauren () vortex com or lauren () pfir org Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 http://www.pfir.org/lauren Co-Founder, PFIR - People For Internet Responsibility - http://www.pfir.org Co-Founder, NNSquad - Network Neutrality Squad - http://www.nnsquad.org Founder, PRIVACY Forum - http://www.vortex.com Member, ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com - - -
