For IP if you wish...

Dear Dave.

In the presence of greatness...

With your kind indulgence, a bit of seemingly significant diversion from the typical content of interest from you and your constituents of “interesting-people”.

I read all you publish with genuine interest. To confess, often enough with more interest than understanding. I do recognize some of your contributors among people whose competencies and accomplishments are substantially beyond simply “interesting”. With the risk of sounding patronizing, you are among those. One of the reasons for my faithful reads of your emails is the recognition that some of your contributors and readers are among those whose presence I would thrill to be in.

I have had the good fortune to meet a few people who are indeed among the “greats.” You know, the number one, the best, the leader, the greatest... in industry, the arts and sports. I have come to hold that it is the achievement that is the pinnacle of the paradigm, not the discipline wherein the achievement was accomplished. To be in the presence of the universally acclaimed “best shoe-shine person” in the world, albeit not comparable to the “best/top/premiere/greatest” practitioners of skills and applicants of knowledge in many, many other more sophisticated endeavors, is still being in the presence of greatness.

Thus, a truly unique intellectual and emotional thrill.

And with that, Dave, a simple mention on the quiet and untimely passing of an American treasure. Levi Stubbs, the lead singer of the FOUR TOPS. He did not invent a mousetrap of any kind. Nor penicillin. Nor did he participate in our ascent into space. He was not high tech.; just virtual and timeless. Like R&B or not, we all lost a piece of “greatness” today.

My best.

Steve.
