Yes it will be an interesting discussion. Many moons ago, Steve Walker, Marshall Rose and I did a real transparent encrypted mail system (like over 20 years ago). Worked like a charm. No one wanted it Dave ________________________________________ From: Tony Lauck [tlauck () madriver com] Sent: Monday, July 21, 2008 12:11 PM To: David Farber Subject: Encrypt your email (Re: [IP] DPI and ISPs versus Gmail and Google) If your only email privacy concern is with your ISP and you don't have an option to switch ISP service then you can always use a third party email service that supports two way encrypted mail transmission. If you really need your email to be private then you must encrypt your email. If your correspondents don't support end-to-end email encryption, your mail is probably not private no matter what your ISP does. End to-end encryption is the only hope for privacy; there are too many middlemen to possibly trust. One might ask if there is such concern with privacy, why do very few people use encrypted email? This might lead to an interesting discussion. Tony Lauck https://www.aglauck.com David Farber wrote:

People know that, right? Recall, Gmail READS EVERY MAIL MESSAGE TO SERVE ADS! Ah, but there is a big difference. I can use Gmail or not. I can use Gmail for things that are going to be posted on the Internet anyway and another account for things I really want to keep private. But if my ISP is scanning every packet then I'm stuck. Sure, I can switch to another ISP, but the odd are they are going to scan the packets too. This all seems to be a slippery slope in action: 1) Email is scanned for spam and virus reasons 2) So Google can scan email to serve ads Google can scan my email because I gave them permission to do so (by using their optional service). Having an ISP is not optional if you want to use the Internet. -- Esse Quam Videre To Be, rather than to Seem ------------------------------------------- Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/247/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/247/ Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
