Last December I noted the problem again in: http: Must Die! (and The Encryption Solution) ( http://lauren.vortex.com/archive/000338.html ) Pervasive encryption is not only important to stop snooping, but to prevent ISPs from easily tampering with and modifying traffic as well (as in inserting their own ads into third-party pages, replacing ads with their own, and so on -- all applications generally associated with DPI). Unfortunately, we are not making rapid progress toward a pervasively encrypted Internet, and Firefox 3's recent decimation of self-signed certificates ( http://lauren.vortex.com/archive/000402.html ) was a step backwards in this regard (though I'm currently in a bit of a discussion with a Mozilla-associated party related specifically to this issue). But fundamentally, until *encrypted* is the default condition of Internet traffic, we're likely to see escalating levels of abuse directed at Internet users' communications of all sorts. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein lauren () vortex com or lauren () pfir org Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 http://www.pfir.org/lauren Co-Founder, PFIR - People For Internet Responsibility - http://www.pfir.org Co-Founder, NNSquad - Network Neutrality Squad - http://www.nnsquad.org Founder, PRIVACY Forum - http://www.vortex.com Member, ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com ------------------------------------------- Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/247/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/247/ Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
