The latter is something I've wanted for a long while, but (US) carriers hate the fact I would rather put in a different SIM when traveling instead of roam. This is part of what I call the "Bill of Materials" Manifesto (write-up forthcoming) - it doesn't cost that much more to add in hardware (or functionality) that consumers want, but market power and other reasons prevent these from happening. Examples include adding SD card slots to music players, adding standalone GPS functionality to phones, allowing a phone to be used as a modem (esp. via bluetooth) etc.
